“The Prince of Mist” by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

The story takes place in 1943 during World War II. Max Carver’s father decides to move the family from the city to a safer old house on a seacoast village. However, the Carvers are unaware the house owns a tragic past. Secrets, strange dreams and sinister statues begin to emerge as the family settles in. Max’s younger sister Irina is injured in a freak accident in the house while the older children, Max and Alicia, 13 and 15, befriend a local, Roland, who takes them exploring around town and diving around a shipwreck in the harbor. Roland’s grandfather, the lighthouse keeper, fears the diabolical figure, Cain, The Prince of Mist, is coming soon to collect an old debt.

Haunting, suspenseful and eerie, this story remained with me for awhile.
